All are welcome to help care for growing plants at our nursery, gather seeds for propagation, and tend the forest in the wild plant sanctuary!

Volunteers help us propagate the next generation of native plants, assist with erosion mitigation, fire safety, and ecological succession in the woods, lovingly gather, clean, and store local genotype seed, and stock the seedbanks for the next million years of botanical evolution. We work together to care for the land as the land cares for us.

If you would like to volunteer with Little Bluestem, email nursery@littlebluestem.net to sign up for a slot on our work calendar. Slots are available most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 9 AM - 5 PM. Please sign up at least one week in advance.

Work parties of larger groups are scheduled every other month on Saturdays. Sign up for our newsletter to receive notices of upcoming work parties.

No experience is required, though we welcome those with a background in nursery work, landscaping, gardening, and forestry.

No dogs or unattended children please.

We are located at 1323 Glass Hollow Road, Afton VA. The nursery is behind the big brown house on the left side of the road before a clearing with a pond. If you cross a bridge over a creek, you have gone too far. Do not trust your GPS, it will try to take you to the neighbors or the top of the mountain!
